. [BO:Maynard W. Almeling:BO] was a General Plant Manager for Continental Baking Co. - the makers of Wonder Bread products. He had plants in St. Louis, Mo ., Chicago, Ill,, and Gary, Ind. He retired after 35 years with the company. His hobbies - writing to all five of his grandchildren. Along with bits of humor he always imparted his bits of wisdom; he loved working around the house, building cabinets, painting, cooking and making the best pecan pie. Memberships - GSME (Grocers, Sales, Manufacturers Executives) in Chicago; various church activities in St. Louis and Chicago; asst. coaching of the baseball and softball teams of Sandra and Guy. Maynard served as a Radar Bombardier in World War on a B-29 Fortress that flew on bombing missions to Japan from Guam. His plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean and he was on a life raft with his crew for four days before being rescued by a Navy Minesweeper. After the Armistice, Gen. Doolittle chose a handpicked crew to take the B-29 to all the large capital cities in Australia so the Australians could see what the famous plane looked like and also to donate to the War Bond Drive. Maynard was chosen as the Radar Bombardier on that famous trip which has been written up in several books and publications. They called that plane Waltzing Matilda and they all were feted by all the dignitaries of all the cities they were in.
